What should you know about occasional dizziness?

Short answer
Occasional dizziness has many possible triggers, and the right response depends on whether you feel faint, unsteady, or as if the room is spinning.

Occasional dizziness
Occasional dizziness has many possible triggers, and the right response depends on whether you feel faint, unsteady, or as if the room is spinning. A brief episode after standing may differ from spinning brought on by head movement or lightheadedness during heat, missed meals, or illness.
What it can mean
Feeling faint can occur with dehydration, heat exhaustion, low blood sugar, anaemia, or iron deficiency anaemia. A spinning sensation triggered by turning in bed or moving the head can occur with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Anxiety can produce lightheadedness with fast breathing or a racing heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation may cause dizziness with an irregular or rapid heartbeat. The sensation and accompanying symptoms help guide assessment.
What to do
Sit or lie down as soon as dizziness begins, hold a stable surface, and avoid driving, heights, or machinery until you feel steady. Rise slowly and drink fluids if appropriate. If you have diabetes, follow your personal plan for checking and treating low blood sugar. Note the trigger, duration, body position, meals, heat exposure, palpitations, hearing changes, headache, and medicines.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for dizziness with facial drooping, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, a sudden severe headache, or new inability to walk. Seek prompt medical advice for repeated episodes, injury from a fall, persistent vomiting, new hearing loss, or palpitations.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your description fits lightheadedness, imbalance, or vertigo; whether blood tests, blood-pressure checks, glucose testing, or an ear assessment are appropriate; and how medicines or meal timing may matter. Bring a record of episodes and any home readings you already have.

Questions people ask
What should I do during a dizzy spell?
Sit or lie down, avoid sudden movement, and stay away from driving or hazardous tasks until the sensation has passed. Seek urgent help if neurological, chest, breathing, or fainting symptoms occur.
Why does the type of dizziness matter?
Spinning, feeling faint, and imbalance point clinicians toward different possible causes. Describing the trigger, position, duration, and associated symptoms makes assessment more useful.
