A partner may feel the ring during penetration, particularly if it is positioned near the vaginal opening. It can sometimes cause temporary pressure or irritation for either partner. The hormones are released for the wearer, and brief penile or skin contact is not expected to produce the hormone-related effects associated with taking contraceptive hormones. The ring does not protect either partner from sexually transmitted infections.

Stop if either person has pain, burning, bleeding, or persistent irritation. The wearer can check that the ring is positioned comfortably and can discuss removal during intercourse with a clinician or pharmacist, because the permitted time out of the vagina depends on the product directions. Use condoms when infection protection is needed. Do not let a male partner insert or wear the ring as a contraceptive method.

Arrange medical advice if irritation continues after the ring is repositioned or removed, or if there is swelling, rash, discharge, sores, or pain with urination. Urgent care is appropriate for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms, which may indicate a serious allergic reaction. The wearer should seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or a painful swollen leg.
