How does NuvaRing work?

The ring is a soft, flexible device placed inside the vagina, where it releases a steady dose of hormones. You do not need to position it over the cervix for it to work; once inserted, it can remain in place during sex, bathing, and exercise. It is not a barrier method, so it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

A commonly used schedule is to keep one ring in place for three weeks, remove it for one ring-free week, and then insert a new ring. Bleeding may happen during the ring-free interval, but it is still necessary to follow the prescribed schedule. Some people notice nausea, breast tenderness, headache, or changes in bleeding, especially when starting.

Wash your hands before inserting or removing the ring. Pinch it between your fingers and place it comfortably inside the vagina; its exact position does not affect contraceptive action. Keep track of the insertion and removal dates. If the ring comes out, rinse it with cool or lukewarm water and reinsert it according to the product instructions. If it has been out for longer than the allowed time, use the instructions supplied with your ring and ask a pharmacist or clinician whether you need back-up contraception.

A clinician should review your medical history before prescribing a combined hormonal ring. Tell them about migraine with aura, blood clots, high blood pressure, smoking, liver disease, or medicines and supplements you take, because these can affect whether this method is suitable.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden severe headache, fainting, or new weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking. These symptoms can signal a serious blood-vessel problem and need prompt assessment.

Contact a clinician if you have persistent or heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a new migraine pattern, or difficulty keeping the ring in place. If you think you may be pregnant, remove the ring and arrange medical advice.
