Nut allergy and swollen lips

Allergy-related lip swelling is often sudden and may affect one or both lips. It can occur with itching, hives, facial swelling, stomach symptoms, cough, or wheeze. Angioedema is a term for deeper swelling beneath the skin and may be triggered by allergy, medicines, or other causes. A clinician must consider the timing, foods, medicines, and accompanying symptoms.

Lip swelling can obstruct the mouth or throat as it progresses, so the absence of a rash does not make it harmless. Recurrent episodes without a clear food trigger also deserve assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Stop eating the suspected nut and keep the product or ingredient label. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and have severe symptoms, use it according to your emergency plan and call emergency services. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or have breathing difficulty. A clinician can advise on observation, allergy evaluation, and future avoidance.

Call emergency services now for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, voice change, dizziness, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Obtain prompt medical advice for new swelling after nut exposure even if it is currently limited to the lips, because symptoms can change.
