Short answer

Nurse burnout is work-related physical and emotional exhaustion that can affect concentration, sleep, mood and care at work.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How burnout can show up

Nursing can involve sustained workload, rotating shifts, emotional strain, time pressure and repeated exposure to distress. Burnout may appear as fatigue, irritability, feeling anxious, reduced empathy, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal or a sense that ordinary tasks require unusual effort. Sleep may become unrefreshing or difficult, and some people notice reduced interest in sex.

Burnout is not a personal failure. Similar symptoms can also occur with depression, anxiety, insomnia, thyroid problems, anaemia or other health conditions. A confidential clinical assessment can separate these possibilities and identify support.

Steps that may help

Tell a trusted colleague, supervisor, occupational health service or clinician what has changed, using specific examples such as missed breaks, errors from exhaustion or inability to recover between shifts. Ask about safer staffing, protected breaks, rota changes, supervision and time away from a harmful workload where available.

Outside work, protect a regular sleep routine when shifts allow, eat and drink regularly, move gently, and make space for supportive contact. Avoid relying on alcohol or sedating medicines to switch off. Recovery usually needs both personal care and changes to the pressures causing the exhaustion.

When to seek care

Arrange medical support promptly if fatigue, low mood, anxiety, sleep difficulty or poor concentration persists, worsens, or affects safe practice. Seek emergency help if you feel unable to keep yourself safe, have thoughts of suicide, or are experiencing severe confusion or loss of contact with reality. If patient safety is at immediate risk, step away from clinical duties and alert a responsible colleague.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which symptoms may be burnout or another condition, whether time off or a work note is appropriate, and what treatment or workplace support could help you return safely.

Questions people ask

Is burnout only caused by a busy shift?

No. Ongoing workload, low control, emotional demands, inadequate recovery and workplace pressures can accumulate over time.

Can burnout cause sleep problems?

Yes. Burnout can coexist with difficulty sleeping or insomnia, but persistent sleep symptoms deserve a clinical assessment.
