NSE Immunohistochemistry

Immunohistochemistry applies antibodies to a prepared tissue section. If the target protein is present, a chemical reaction creates a visible staining pattern that a pathologist examines under a microscope. NSE, or neuron-specific enolase, is associated with cells showing neural or neuroendocrine features, but it is not exclusive to one cancer type.

An NSE-positive result does not establish a diagnosis by itself, and a negative result does not rule out every neuroendocrine tumour. The pathologist interprets intensity and distribution with cell appearance, clinical information, imaging, and a panel of other markers. The final report may use wording such as supportive, non-specific, or inconclusive rather than treating the stain as a stand-alone answer.

Ask which diagnosis the stain was intended to clarify and which additional markers were tested. Request an explanation of the full pathology impression, not only the NSE line. If the sample was small, ask whether more tissue or a repeat review is needed. The stain itself does not usually create an urgent symptom. Contact your clinical team promptly if the biopsy site develops increasing redness, swelling, bleeding, drainage, or fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing. Ask when and how the completed pathology report will be communicated.

What question was NSE staining meant to answer? What do the other markers show? Does the overall report identify a tumour type? Is the sample adequate, and should a specialist pathologist review it?
