What should you know about nose sunburn?

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

Nose sunburn causes inflamed, tender skin after ultraviolet exposure and needs cooling, moisturising, and protection while it heals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical symptoms
Redness, heat, tenderness, tightness, peeling, or blisters
First aid
Cool gently, moisturise intact skin, and avoid further sun

What a sunburn can look like

Sunburn commonly makes the nose red, warm, sore, tight, or swollen. The surface may later become dry and peel; blisters indicate a more severe skin reaction. The nose receives direct exposure and can be missed when sunscreen is applied, especially along the bridge, sides, and tip. Repeated sun exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin over time. Sunburn is not the same as a tan, and redness may become more noticeable after exposure rather than immediately. The pattern, discomfort, and timing help distinguish it from contact irritation or another cause of skin redness.

Comfort and protection

Move out of direct sun and cool the area with a clean, cool damp cloth; avoid ice directly on the skin. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free emollient when the surface is intact, drink fluids, and avoid picking or peeling loose skin. Do not pop blisters. Keep the nose shaded with a hat and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on healed, unbroken skin, reapplying as directed. Avoid harsh cleansers, scrubs, retinoids, and fragranced products until tenderness has settled. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using any steroid cream on facial skin.

When to seek care

Get medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, fever, dizziness, vomiting, or signs of dehydration. Seek urgent care if swelling affects the eyes or breathing, or if you feel faint or confused. A clinician may recommend specific dressings or treatment for inflammation; do not apply topical corticosteroids to broken skin unless directed. Persistent changes after healing should also be checked.

Questions for your doctor

Is this burn superficial or blistering? Which moisturiser is suitable for my nose? Should I use a topical corticosteroid, and where? How can I protect this area during future outdoor exposure?

Questions people ask

Can I peel sunburned skin from my nose?

No. Let loose skin come away naturally; pulling it can expose and irritate the healing surface.

When can I use sunscreen after a nose sunburn?

Protect the area from sun immediately with shade; apply sunscreen once the skin is intact and comfortable enough to tolerate it.
