What should you know about nose itching?

Itching on the outer nose or around the nostrils may accompany dryness, friction, a new cosmetic or contact dermatitis. Most people with atopic dermatitis notice intense itching, often with dry, inflamed or cracked skin. Psoriasis and lichen planus can produce persistent scaly or thickened areas. Hives tend to cause raised itchy welts that come and go, while scabies usually causes widespread itching and may affect household contacts. Skin yeast infection is more likely where moisture and irritation are present. Asteatotic eczema causes very dry, cracked skin rather than a single brief tickle.

Pause any newly introduced facial product, fragrance, cleanser or nasal-area adhesive and wash gently with lukewarm water. Pat dry instead of rubbing, then use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on intact outer skin. Avoid scratching, cotton swab friction and strong exfoliants. Note whether the itch follows heat, sweating, a product, visible scale or exposure to someone with similar symptoms. A clinician can match treatment to the appearance; avoid applying steroid, antifungal or scabies medicine inside the nose unless specifically instructed.

Book an assessment if itching lasts, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep or is accompanied by a rash, scaling, cracking, discharge or sores. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading swelling, painful redness, pus, fever or involvement of the eye. Emergency help is needed for sudden nose or facial swelling with trouble breathing, throat tightness or faintness. A persistent one-sided crust, bleeding spot or non-healing sore should also be examined.

Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, contact dermatitis, infection or another condition, which products are safe near the nostrils, and whether testing is needed. Bring a list of new products and describe timing, triggers, sleep disturbance and any affected household members.
