What a normal glucose tolerance test result means

This result is reassuring because it does not show gestational diabetes on that screening test. It does not mean you need to change prescribed medicines or skip routine pregnancy appointments.

A glucose tolerance test, also called an OGTT or sugar test in pregnancy, checks how your body processes glucose over a set period. A blood sample is taken before and after you drink a measured glucose solution. The laboratory compares the readings with the testing thresholds used by your maternity service.

A normal result applies to the pregnancy and the time when the sample was collected. It is not a diagnosis of every future blood-sugar problem, and it does not explain symptoms that have another cause. Your clinician may still consider your overall health, pregnancy history, medicines, and any later changes.

Continue your scheduled antenatal visits and follow the food, activity, and medication advice given for your pregnancy. Keep the result with your maternity records so another clinician can see when and how it was assessed.

If the test was difficult because you vomited, could not complete the drink, or were unwell, tell the testing team. They can explain whether another assessment is needed. Do not repeat the test or start a glucose-lowering treatment without clinical advice.

Contact your maternity team if you have ongoing excessive thirst, pass urine much more often than usual, feel unusually weak, or have repeated blurred vision. These symptoms can have several explanations, so the team may decide whether you need an examination or another blood-sugar check despite the earlier result.

Seek urgent pregnancy care for severe vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or any other emergency symptom. A normal glucose tolerance test should not delay help for a new or rapidly worsening problem.

You could ask which readings were measured, whether all samples were within the service's expected range, and whether your symptoms or pregnancy history change the follow-up plan. Ask when the result will be recorded in your antenatal notes and who to contact if new symptoms appear.
