What should you know about normal bone marrow flow cytometry?

Flow cytometry examines cells suspended from a marrow sample and measures markers on or inside them. The laboratory compares the pattern with expected blood-forming cell groups. A normal result is reassuring for the populations and markers assessed, but it is not a stand-alone statement about every marrow disorder.

Clinicians combine it with the complete blood count, blood film, marrow appearance under a microscope, chromosome or molecular tests when indicated, and your symptoms. Sampling and the amount of material available can affect what the test can show.

Ask whether the sample was adequate and which cell populations were evaluated. Review the result alongside your blood counts and the written bone marrow biopsy report. If abnormal counts, bruising, infections, fatigue or fevers continue, the care team may recommend repeat blood tests or another investigation. Do not treat the flow result as a substitute for the full diagnostic review.

Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, shaking chills, unusual bleeding, rapidly worsening weakness or breathlessness. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion or bleeding that does not stop with pressure. These symptoms require assessment even when flow cytometry is normal.
