What should you know about non positional vertigo?

The balance organs in the inner ear, eyes, and brain work together to orient you. Irritation in this system can cause vertigo while you are sitting or standing still. Meniere's disease may combine vertigo with hearing changes or ringing. Migraine can cause dizziness with or without a headache. An inner-ear infection may follow an illness and can disturb balance. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is different because head movement commonly triggers brief episodes.

Sit or lie somewhere safe, keep your head still, and focus on a fixed point. Rise slowly and avoid driving, heights, and machinery until your balance is reliable. Sip fluids if you can, and record the timing, duration, hearing symptoms, headache, recent infection, and medicines. A clinician can examine your ears, eye movements, walking, and coordination to guide treatment; an Epley Manoeuvre is intended for positional vertigo and should not be assumed to treat every type.

Seek urgent medical help for vertigo with trouble speaking, facial or limb weakness, fainting, a new severe headache, chest pain, inability to walk, or repeated vomiting. Arrange prompt assessment if symptoms are new, persistent, recurrent, follow a head injury, or come with sudden hearing loss. These features need examination because vertigo has several possible causes.
