What should you know about left non-obstructing nephrolithiasis?

Nephrolithiasis is the medical term for kidney stones. Non-obstructing means the stone was not stopping urine from draining when the scan was performed. Left identifies the kidney involved; it does not predict whether the stone will move later.

A stone can cause no symptoms while it remains in the kidney. If it moves into the ureter, it may cause flank or abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine, nausea, or difficulty passing urine. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated and may contribute to stone formation.

Arrange a GP consultation to review the report, stone size and location, kidney function, urine findings, previous stones, and relevant medicines. Follow-up imaging or an abdominal ultrasound may be suggested when monitoring is appropriate.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Do not force large amounts of fluid during severe pain or vomiting. Keep a note of pain, urinary changes, fever, and whether you can keep fluids down.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent flank pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, visible blood in urine, or difficulty passing urine. These signs can indicate infection or impaired drainage and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask how large and where the stone is, whether it needs monitoring or treatment, which fluid plan suits you, whether urine or blood tests are needed, and which symptoms should trigger emergency review.
