What should you know about non-metastatic Ewing sarcoma?

Ewing sarcoma is a cancer that can begin in bone or in soft tissue near bone. It may cause persistent pain, swelling, a lump, or reduced movement. Non-metastatic means the staging assessment has not identified distant spread; doctors still examine the original tumour carefully and look for disease in places where it could have travelled.

Diagnosis usually combines imaging with a biopsy. The pathology report confirms the tumour type, while scans help define its size and position and whether nearby structures are involved. The treatment team uses these findings to plan care around the tumour’s location and the person’s overall health.

Treatment commonly involves chemotherapy to treat cancer cells throughout the body, followed by local control with surgery, radiotherapy, or both. The order can vary. Surgery may remove the tumour while preserving function when possible; radiotherapy may be considered when surgery is difficult or when additional local treatment is needed.

Keep appointments with the specialist team and report fever, new pain, numbness, or reduced movement. Before treatment, ask about fertility, dental care, vaccinations, infection precautions, and how the plan may affect school, work, exercise, or daily activities.

During treatment, seek urgent advice for a fever, chills, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. New weakness, loss of sensation, or rapidly increasing swelling near the tumour also needs prompt assessment. Use the emergency contact plan supplied by the oncology team.
