Non-itchy rash: possible causes and care

Look at whether the rash is flat or raised, dry or moist, sharply bordered or spreading, and whether it is limited to an area that touched a product. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis may cause dry, inflamed patches; Contact Dermatitis may follow an exposure. Heat Rash affects sweat-prone areas, while Intertrigo develops where skin rubs together. Ringworm can form an expanding scaly edge, Scabies often affects characteristic sites and contacts, and Drug Rash may begin after a new medicine. These patterns overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Photograph the rash and write down its onset, spread, new medicines, skincare, detergents, plants, travel, illness, and household contacts with similar symptoms. Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and pause newly introduced fragranced products. Wear loose clothing and avoid scratching or applying several active creams without advice. If a medicine may be involved, contact the prescriber promptly before making changes, especially when it was prescribed for an important condition.

Get urgent medical help for a rapidly spreading rash, blistering, peeling skin, purple or bruise-like spots, fever, facial swelling, mouth or eye involvement, breathing difficulty, or feeling faint. Arrange assessment when the rash persists, returns, becomes painful, or follows a new medicine. Prompt review is also appropriate when a rash affects a baby, an older adult, or someone with reduced immunity.

Which features point toward irritation, infection, inflammation, heat, or a medicine reaction? Could any current treatment be worsening the rash? Do I need an examination, swab, scraping, or other test, and what changes should trigger urgent care?
