What should you know about non-invasive liquid biopsy?

Tumour cells can release small fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. A laboratory may analyse these fragments for changes associated with a known cancer, signs that cancer treatment is affecting tumour DNA, or features that could help guide treatment choices. The test is less physically invasive than a tissue biopsy, but it does not answer every question.

A blood result can be difficult to interpret when very little tumour DNA is circulating. A result that does not find a change may therefore reflect the sample rather than prove that no cancer is present. The meaning depends on the cancer type, the reason for testing, and other clinical information.

Ask what decision the test is intended to inform and whether a tissue sample is still needed. Tell the team about current medicines, recent procedures, and any previous cancer results. Blood is taken from a vein and sent to a specialist laboratory; the clinician will explain when and how the result will be discussed.

Use the result alongside scans, examination findings, and pathology rather than treating it as a stand-alone diagnosis. If the result is unclear or does not match the rest of the assessment, the team may suggest another test or a tissue biopsy.
