What should you know about non-drowsy Benadryl?

The name can be confusing because traditional Benadryl commonly contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that may cause marked drowsiness. A non-drowsy product may contain a different active ingredient, so check the package rather than assuming two products are interchangeable. Antihistamines can reduce histamine-related itching, sneezing, runny nose, hives, and some swelling, but they do not treat every cause of a rash.

Read the active ingredient, strength, age directions, and warnings before taking a dose. Do not combine products that contain the same antihistamine, and ask a pharmacist about interactions if you take sedatives, have glaucoma, prostate or urinary problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. For recurring hives, a clinician can help choose an oral antihistamine plan and look for triggers. Keep a note of whether symptoms improve and whether sleepiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or palpitations occur.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; faintness; or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal a severe allergic reaction or angioedema and need urgent assessment. Arrange medical review for a rash that is painful, blistering, infected-looking, persistent, or accompanied by fever.
