No diastasis recti: what it means after pregnancy

How the structures involved in Diastasis Recti differ from normal

Short answer

No diastasis recti means there is no clear abdominal muscle separation on assessment, but other causes can still explain pain, weakness, or a changing tummy shape.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the result

Diastasis recti refers to widening and thinning of the connective tissue along the centre of the abdominal wall. A clinician or physiotherapist may assess the midline while you move, cough, or gently tense the muscles. A normal finding means this particular separation was not identified at that assessment.

It does not measure overall core strength, pelvic-floor function, posture, scar sensitivity, or recovery after birth. A soft abdomen, back discomfort, or difficulty lifting may have another explanation. Symptoms can also change as tissues recover, so the context and examination matter.

What to do now

Return gradually to activity, use comfortable lifting technique, and stop an exercise that causes pain, pressure, leaking, or a visible bulge. Focus on breathing and controlled movement rather than repeatedly checking the midline. Postnatal Physiotherapy can help assess abdominal coordination, pelvic-floor symptoms, and a safe progression after birth.

If you have no symptoms, you may not need treatment for diastasis recti. Keep routine postpartum follow-up and mention any concern that persists or limits daily tasks.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for increasing abdominal pain, a tender or firm bulge, vomiting, fever, wound changes, or difficulty passing urine or stool. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, faintness, or a rapidly enlarging swelling. These signs need evaluation for causes other than uncomplicated muscle recovery.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what was assessed, whether your symptoms suggest a different problem, and which activities are suitable at your stage of recovery. If you have pelvic pressure, urine leakage, or back pain, ask whether a postnatal physiotherapy assessment would help.

Questions people ask

Can I still have abdominal symptoms without diastasis recti?

Yes. Abdominal coordination, pelvic-floor changes, scars, posture, and other conditions can cause symptoms even when separation is not found.

Do I need exercises if I do not have diastasis recti?

Exercise needs depend on your symptoms, birth recovery, and general health. Gradual activity is usually more useful than exercises aimed at a condition you do not have.
