No contractions after a membrane sweep: what to know

A sweep separates the membranes near the cervix during an examination. It may cause temporary cramping, light spotting, or increased discharge, but some people feel no immediate change. The cervix may not yet be ready for labour, and the timing of labour cannot be determined from symptoms alone.

Your midwife or obstetric team may discuss whether a repeat sweep or Induction of Labour is appropriate. That decision depends on factors such as gestational age, cervical findings, your health, and the baby's wellbeing.

Follow the personalised advice from your maternity team, rest, drink fluids as advised, and keep track of fetal movements. Mild cramps or a small amount of spotting can occur after the examination; use a pad if you need to monitor fluid or blood rather than inserting anything into the vagina.

Keep the follow-up appointment even if nothing happens. Write down when the sweep occurred, any pain or bleeding, and whether your waters may have broken so the team can make a clear plan.

Contact maternity care urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, fever, or fluid that may be your waters. Call for guidance if contractions become regular and stronger, or if you are worried after the examination.

Ask what response is expected after your sweep, when your next review should happen, and what signs mean you should attend the maternity unit. Ask how your cervical findings affect the options of another sweep or induction.
