What should you know about nickel allergy makeup?

Nickel allergy is a delayed contact reaction. Makeup itself may contain colourants, preservatives or fragrances that cause other reactions, while metal pans, eyelash curlers, tweezers, brushes or applicator handles may expose sensitive skin to nickel. The rash can appear on the eyelids, cheeks, lips or around the area handled during application. Burning, swelling, dryness, tiny blisters or intense itching can occur. A pattern that follows a metal tool or appears after repeated use can help a clinician assess the trigger, but appearance alone cannot confirm nickel.

Stop the suspected product and clean reusable tools gently. Avoid rubbing the area, applying new cosmetics over the rash, or testing several products at once. Use bland, fragrance-free skin care while the skin settles, and keep a note of the product name, applicator and timing. A dermatologist can consider patch testing for nickel and other ingredients. If treatment is recommended, use a prescribed topical medicine only as directed; topical corticosteroids may be used for some inflammatory rashes.

Arrange medical advice if the rash involves the eyelids, keeps returning, spreads beyond the contact area, or does not improve after avoiding the suspected trigger. Seek urgent help for marked facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Pain, warmth, pus, fever or crusting can signal infection and needs prompt assessment.
