What should you know about newborn sunburn face?

Sunburn can cause warmth, redness, tenderness, swelling, and later peeling. On a newborn’s face, redness can also follow crying, heat, rubbing, or a product reaction, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Blisters, marked swelling, fluid, or peeling point to more significant skin injury and should be discussed with a clinician. A sunburn is different from long-term sun-damaged skin, but preventing further exposure matters for both immediate comfort and future skin health.

Bring the baby indoors or into deep shade and loosen warm clothing. Keep the face cool with a clean, cool damp cloth held gently against the skin; do not use ice. Continue normal feeds unless a clinician advises otherwise. Avoid rubbing, popping blisters, fragranced creams, numbing products, and topical corticosteroids unless prescribed for this baby.
