What should you know about NEUN immunohistochemistry?

NEUN immunohistochemistry is a tissue stain that helps pathologists identify neuronal cells and interpret a biopsy with other findings. NEUN, also written NeuN, is a protein marker commonly associated with mature neurons. A positive or negative stain is one part of a pathology assessment; it does not by itself name a tumour, determine its behaviour or select treatment.

A pathologist places thin tissue sections on slides, applies an antibody designed to bind the NEUN marker and uses a chemical or fluorescent system to make the binding visible. The distribution and strength of staining are considered alongside the tissue architecture, cell appearance and other markers. Results can help distinguish neuronal tissue from other cell types or support the classification of a nervous-system lesion. Technical quality, the sampled area and the panel of stains all matter when the report is interpreted.

Ask whether the NEUN stain was ordered to answer a specific diagnostic question and which other stains were used with it. Request an explanation of the report in plain language, including whether the sample was adequate and whether more tissue, imaging or review by a specialist is needed. The procedure that obtains the tissue is a biopsy; the stain is performed afterward in the laboratory. Keep the complete pathology report for future appointments.

Seek urgent help after a biopsy for heavy bleeding, worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, confusion or a new neurological problem. Contact the treating team promptly if you develop a new seizure, weakness, loss of balance or a sudden change in speech or vision. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the eventual staining result.

Ask what NEUN shows in your specimen, whether the staining pattern is expected, how it fits with the microscope appearance and scans, and whether the diagnosis remains uncertain. Ask when the full pathology interpretation will be available and whether a second pathology opinion would add useful information.
