What should you know about NETosis flow cytometry?

NETosis flow cytometry is a laboratory method that uses cell markers and light signals to study extracellular trap formation by neutrophils. NETosis is a process in which activated neutrophils release web-like material made from DNA and proteins. The test is specialised and is interpreted alongside symptoms, other blood findings and the reason the sample was requested.

In flow cytometry, cells pass through a narrow stream and a laser records features such as size, internal complexity and attached fluorescent markers. For NETosis-related work, the laboratory may look for combinations of markers associated with neutrophils, activation, DNA outside cells or proteins linked with extracellular traps. A signal is not a diagnosis by itself. Sample handling, timing, inflammation and the chosen markers can affect interpretation, so the report should be read by the treating team with the clinical context.

Ask which sample was tested, why NETosis was being assessed and whether any preparation was needed. Blood testing often involves a routine sample, but the exact process depends on the laboratory. Tell the team about medicines, infection symptoms and recent procedures that could affect immune-cell activity. If the test is part of a blood-cancer assessment, flow cytometry may be used with a bone marrow biopsy or other investigations. Keep the laboratory report and ask which findings are actionable and which are exploratory.

Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, chills, new breathlessness, unusual bleeding, severe weakness or signs of infection, particularly if you are being assessed for an immune or blood disorder. After a blood draw, seek help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, increasing swelling or fainting. The test itself does not determine urgency; your symptoms and wider medical situation do.
