Nerve damage on a finger: what to know

A cut, crush injury, tight swelling or pressure can affect a digital nerve. Peripheral neuropathy can also cause sensory changes, sometimes alongside symptoms in the hand or feet. Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency and heavy alcohol use are possible underlying contributors. Symptoms may include burning, reduced ability to feel heat, clumsiness or pain from light touch. A clinician may compare sensation and movement with the other hand and examine circulation, skin and the injury site.

Protect the finger from heat, sharp objects and repeated pressure while sensation is reduced. Keep any wound clean and covered, remove rings if swelling is developing, and avoid trying to test sensation with a pin. Arrange a clinical assessment for a new or ongoing change; a Blood Test or Diabetes Screening may be considered when a wider nerve problem is suspected. Do not start high-dose vitamins without advice.

Seek urgent care after a deep cut, severe crush, rapidly increasing swelling, a pale or blue finger, inability to move it, or sudden loss of feeling. Prompt assessment also matters if numbness is spreading, pain is severe, or a wound shows increasing redness, warmth, discharge or fever. Call emergency services for sudden weakness or numbness affecting an arm or side of the body.
