Negative network on dermoscopy: what to know

A dermatoscope magnifies and illuminates skin so a clinician can inspect structures that are difficult to see with the naked eye. A negative network describes pale, reticular lines surrounding darker holes or areas. It is a visual feature, not a diagnosis by itself. The clinician also considers symmetry, colours, dots, streaks, borders, change over time, and whether the mark is new or unusual for you. A reassuring phrase on a report does not replace the complete assessment.

Keep a copy or photograph of the assessment and ask what was seen, whether comparison with an older image is useful, and whether monitoring or sampling is advised. Book a review if the mole changes in size, shape, colour, or surface, or if it starts bleeding, crusting, itching persistently, or becoming tender. Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly changing or markedly different lesion. Urgency comes from the lesion’s behaviour and symptoms, not from the label negative network alone.

Ask whether the pattern is considered benign in context, what specific changes should trigger review, whether a comparison image is available, and why observation or biopsy is being recommended.
