What should you know about neck lipo compression garment?

After neck liposuction, a compression garment may support tissues and help manage postoperative swelling while healing progresses. It is usually selected and fitted by the surgical team for the treated area. It should sit evenly under the chin and around the neck, without pressing on the airway, rubbing an incision or making swallowing uncomfortable.

Liposuction changes the soft tissues beneath the skin, so swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary firmness can occur during recovery. Gentle compression can reduce movement of the treated tissues and provide a supported feeling as the area settles. It cannot prevent every postoperative change, and the appearance of the neck should not be judged while swelling is still shifting.

Your surgeon may change the schedule as wounds heal. The correct design depends on incision position, dressings, skin sensitivity and the amount of swelling. A garment used for another body area may not provide the right shape or pressure for the neck.

Wear the garment only for the schedule your surgical team gives you. Smooth wrinkles before fastening it and avoid adding tight bandages beneath it unless specifically instructed. Keep dressings and incisions protected as advised, and inspect exposed skin for rubbing, increasing redness or pressure marks.

Rest with your head supported if that is comfortable, move gently as permitted, and avoid changing the garment because of a photograph or a short-term appearance concern. If swelling later behaves like lymphoedema, your team may discuss lymphoedema therapy, which can include assessment, skin care and movement advice.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing one-sided swelling, worsening pain, spreading redness, fever, foul-smelling drainage, bleeding, wound separation or a garment that leaves persistent marks. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, choking, rapidly expanding neck swelling or faintness. Do not wait for the next routine appointment when these symptoms appear.

Ask when to start wearing the garment, how long each day to use it, how to remove it for washing, and how it should sit over dressings. Clarify which swelling is expected, how wounds should be checked, when exercise is allowed, and whom to contact if the garment becomes painful or no longer fits.
