Neck intertrigo: symptoms and care

Intertrigo develops where two surfaces rub and trap sweat, including folds beneath the chin or around a fuller neck. The skin may look red, sore, moist, cracked, or shiny, and it can sting or itch. A rash that has small spots at its edge, a change in odour, or worsening moisture may have a superimposed Skin Yeast Infection. Contact dermatitis, eczema, and infection can look similar, so persistent or recurrent rash deserves a clinical check.

The skin barrier becomes easier to irritate when rubbing continues. Heat, exercise, tight clothing, saliva, and fragranced products may add to the problem. Neck intertrigo is not the same as a rash elsewhere, such as Itchy Groin, although the same moisture-and-friction pattern can occur in different folds.

Wash gently, rinse away cleanser, and pat the fold completely dry rather than rubbing. Change damp clothing, choose breathable fabrics, and take breaks from necklaces or collars that trap moisture. Avoid fragranced sprays and harsh scrubs. A clinician may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment when yeast is suspected; use it as directed and do not mix several medicated creams without advice. If sweating repeatedly triggers the rash, Prescription Antiperspirant may be discussed after the skin has been assessed.

Arrange medical review if the rash is painful, rapidly spreading, cracked, draining, foul-smelling, or not improving with careful drying. Seek prompt help for fever, severe tenderness, pus, or redness extending beyond the fold. These features may point to infection rather than simple irritation. Recurrent neck-fold rash may also need assessment for triggers and a tailored prevention plan.

Ask whether the rash is simple intertrigo, yeast-related, or another skin condition; which product is safest for the neck; how long to use it; and how to prevent moisture and friction from returning.
