What should you know about neck compression garment?

A neck compression garment applies gentle, shaped pressure to support fluid movement and swelling management after treatment. It may be recommended when swelling affects the neck or lower face, including during recovery from surgery or radiotherapy. The garment should feel supportive without making breathing, swallowing, speaking or movement difficult.

Compression is created by close-fitting fabric and panels that press the tissues evenly. This can help limit pooling of lymph fluid and may make swelling feel less heavy or tight. A garment does not remove the underlying cause of swelling, and it should not be used to cover a new unexplained lump without clinical advice. Fit matters: a loose garment may not provide useful support, while excessive pressure can irritate skin or restrict comfort.

A specialist may assess your scar, skin condition, sensation, jaw movement and swallowing before recommending a style. Some garments extend under the chin or around the jaw; others are designed for a particular surgical area.

Follow the wearing schedule given by your clinician and put the garment on smoothly, without folded edges. Check the skin underneath and along the seams for redness, rubbing, blistering or broken areas. Keep the fabric clean and dry according to its care instructions, and replace it when it loses shape or becomes difficult to position.

Do not tighten straps to chase faster improvement. Remove it and contact the team that fitted it if you develop new pain, numbness, colour change, worsening tightness or difficulty swallowing. Lymphoedema therapy can combine compression with movement, skin care and other techniques when appropriate.

Seek urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, choking, rapidly increasing swelling of the face or neck, or swelling of the tongue. Arrange prompt clinical review for fever, spreading redness, drainage from a wound, severe pain, or a garment that repeatedly causes pressure marks. If swelling is gradually changing or the garment no longer fits, contact your treating team so the cause and fit can be reassessed.

Ask which area the garment should cover, how to position the chin and jaw panels, when to wear and remove it, and how to wash it. Also ask how to tell expected pressure from excessive pressure, what to do if your skin breaks, and when a replacement or refitting is needed.
