Neck cellulitis treatment: what to know

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. On the neck, redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling can extend beyond the area first noticed. A clinician may examine the skin, check temperature and vital signs, and look for an entry point such as a wound, bite, or another skin infection. A sore throat, dental problem, or deeper neck infection can sometimes cause similar swelling, so the examination matters.

Treatment depends on how extensive the infection is and how well you are. Mild, localised infection may be treated with oral antibiotics. More extensive infection, rapid progression, fever, immune problems, or difficulty taking medicines may require hospital assessment and antibiotics through a vein. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without medical advice.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for new painful redness or swelling of the neck. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or massaging it, and remove tight collars or jewellery. Marking the edge of redness with a pen can help you notice whether it is spreading, but it does not replace assessment. Tell the clinician about diabetes, medicines that affect immunity, allergies, recent injuries, and any dental or throat symptoms. Go to an emergency department immediately for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, rapidly increasing neck swelling, confusion, faintness, severe pain, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for fever with shaking chills or skin that becomes dusky, blistered, or numb. These signs can indicate a deeper infection or sepsis and need rapid evaluation. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are worsening over hours.
