NB-UVB machine: what to know

NB-UVB stands for narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy. A cabin or smaller device exposes affected skin to a selected light range while protecting areas that do not need treatment. Dermatologists may use it for conditions such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and some forms of eczema, especially when creams alone are not enough or large areas are involved. It is a medical treatment, not a tanning session.

Follow the clinic’s schedule and tell the team about medicines, light sensitivity, recent sun exposure, and any history of unusual reactions to light. Wear the required eye protection and cover areas the clinician tells you to protect. Do not add tanning or extra ultraviolet exposure between sessions. Keep a record of redness, soreness, itching, or new changes so the dose can be reviewed.

Contact the treatment team if redness lasts longer than expected, becomes painful, blisters, or interferes with daily activities. Report eye pain or visual symptoms promptly. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe blistering reaction. A flare of the treated condition, new scaly areas, or persistent itchy skin may mean the plan needs adjustment.
