Nausea when traveling

Short answer
Nausea when traveling is often caused by motion signals that do not agree, although dehydration, heat, infection, or another condition can also contribute.

What it can mean
Motion sickness happens when the eyes, inner ears, and body send different information about movement. It can occur in cars, buses, boats, aircraft, or on winding roads, and may include dizziness, cold sweating, pallor, headache, or vomiting. Reading, looking down at a phone, strong odours, a warm cabin, anxiety, an empty stomach, or a heavy meal can intensify it. Nausea with diarrhoea or fever may instead fit food poisoning or gastroenteritis, especially after unfamiliar food or water.
What to do during a journey
Choose a seat with the clearest view of the horizon and face the direction of travel. Keep your head supported, focus on distant scenery, and avoid reading or screens. Use cool air, loosen tight clothing, and take small sips of water. Eat light, plain food if you can tolerate it, and avoid alcohol and strong smells. A pharmacist can explain whether a motion-sickness medicine is suitable, including possible drowsiness and interactions.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe headache, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek medical advice if nausea lasts after the journey, happens without motion, returns frequently, or comes with fever, jaundice, marked weakness, or very little urine. Consider medical advice before travel if you are pregnant, have diabetes, or take medicines that affect balance or fluid levels.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which preventive medicine suits your journey, when to take it, whether it causes drowsiness, and what symptoms would need care while abroad.

When should travel nausea be checked?
Arrange advice when it persists after travel, recurs without movement, or causes dehydration or repeated vomiting.
