Nausea and missed miscarriage: what to know

A missed miscarriage is a pregnancy loss in which the body may not immediately cause bleeding or cramping. Pregnancy hormones can remain present for a while, meaning nausea, breast tenderness, or a positive pregnancy test may continue. Nausea by itself cannot diagnose a miscarriage. Assessment commonly combines an ultrasound with the pregnancy history and, when needed, repeat testing. Other explanations for nausea include normal pregnancy changes, stomach illness, medicines, dehydration, or another health condition.

Contact your maternity team or gynaecologist if you have been told a miscarriage is possible, if symptoms have changed, or if nausea is making it hard to drink. They can explain the scan findings and discuss expectant, medical, or surgical management according to your situation. Small sips of fluid and bland foods may be easier to tolerate. Do not start or stop medicines in pregnancy without checking first. If a miscarriage has been confirmed, ask how follow-up will check that the uterus has cleared and what symptoms to expect.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. Get prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, or feel unusually weak. These symptoms can signal dehydration, infection, or another pregnancy complication and need assessment rather than being explained by nausea alone.

Ask whether the ultrasound confirms the pregnancy location and development, whether another scan is needed, which management options are suitable, and which symptoms should bring you back urgently. You can also ask about anti-nausea treatment, follow-up testing, and emotional support after pregnancy loss.
