Nausea During Pregnancy: What Helps and When to Seek Care

Short answer
Nausea during pregnancy is common and may improve with small meals, fluids, rest, and medical advice when symptoms are difficult to control.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nausea during pregnancy can mean
Hormonal changes can affect the stomach and the parts of the brain that control vomiting. Nausea may happen at any time of day, with or without vomiting, and smells or an empty stomach can make it worse. It often settles as pregnancy progresses, but the pattern varies from person to person.
Nausea is not the same as a diagnosis. Vomiting with fever, diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, or marked weakness can have another cause, such as food poisoning, gastroenteritis, or hepatitis A.
Ways to make eating and drinking easier
Try a plain snack before getting out of bed, then eat small amounts often. Choose foods you can tolerate and avoid smells that trigger symptoms. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink regularly; taking small sips may be easier than drinking a full glass. Rest, fresh air, and ginger may help some people.
Tell your obstetrician, midwife, or GP if nausea prevents normal eating, drinking, work, or sleep. They can check hydration and discuss pregnancy-appropriate anti-sickness treatment. Do not start a medicine or supplement without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy.
When to seek care promptly
Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, feel faint, have a racing heartbeat, or are losing weight. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Persistent vomiting may need fluids and treatment in a clinic or hospital.
Questions to ask your doctor
Ask which foods and drinks may suit your symptoms, how to recognise dehydration, and which anti-sickness options are appropriate for your pregnancy. Mention any medicines, supplements, previous pregnancies, and whether vomiting is affecting urination or daily activities.
