Nasal gel testosterone: what to know

Testosterone is an androgen hormone. A gel is absorbed through the tissue where it is applied, and a nasal product has different instructions from a skin gel. It should not be assumed that products can be swapped, shared, or used in another body area. Testosterone therapy for women may be discussed for selected symptoms after menopause when other explanations and options have been considered. It is not a general energy or fitness product. Benefits, limits, and possible effects depend on the formulation, dose, baseline health, and monitoring plan.

Use only the product and route prescribed. Follow instructions about preparation, application, hand washing, contact with other people, storage, and missed doses. Keep a record of symptoms and any changes in skin, hair, voice, mood, or bleeding. Do not increase the amount because a benefit is slow or uncertain. Ask whether blood tests or follow-up are needed and tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding, liver problems, cardiovascular concerns, or other hormones and medicines. A clinician may stop or adjust treatment when the balance of benefit and unwanted effects changes.

Contact the prescriber promptly for new or worsening acne, facial hair, scalp hair loss, voice change, unexpected bleeding, severe mood change, or nasal irritation or bleeding. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, chest pain, sudden weakness, or a severe allergic reaction. Do not continue a product that was not prescribed for you, and seek advice if you are unsure whether a nasal gel is intended for your formulation.
