Nasal cauterization after care

Cauterization seals a small blood vessel or fragile area inside the nose. The treated spot can feel tender, dry, blocked, or mildly irritated while a protective crust forms. A small amount of spotting may occur, especially if the nose is rubbed or becomes dry. Healing is helped by leaving the crust alone and preventing forceful pressure in the nasal passages.

Use only the spray, ointment, or saline care recommended for you. Do not pick the treated area, blow your nose forcefully, or put tissues, cotton buds, or fingers inside the nostril. Sneeze with your mouth open. Avoid strenuous exertion, heavy lifting, hot showers, and smoky or dusty air for the period your clinician advises. Contact the treating clinic if bleeding keeps returning, pain or swelling is increasing, or the area develops worsening discharge or an unpleasant smell. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, faintness, trouble breathing, or blood flowing persistently into the throat. Do not restart or stop a prescribed medicine without checking with the prescriber.
