Nappy rash on the neck: what to know

A baby's neck folds can trap sweat, milk, dribble and bath water. Repeated dampness softens the skin, and movement can add friction. The result may be red, sore or shiny skin under the chin and along the folds. This is separate from a rash caused by a nappy, but the same moisture-and-friction pattern explains why families may use the term nappy rash. A rash that is intensely red in the folds, has small surrounding spots or keeps returning may need assessment for yeast or another cause.

Wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed. Rinse away milk or dribble, then pat every fold dry with a soft towel. Give the neck time without a bib when practical, and change damp clothing or bibs promptly. Avoid scrubbing, perfumed creams and powders, which can further irritate broken skin.
