Possible reasons

A damp nappy, loose stools, tight clothing, rubbing, scented wipes, or a new product can keep irritating skin. Persistent redness may reflect eczema or contact dermatitis. Yeast can involve folds; bacterial infection may cause warmth, swelling, crusting, or discharge. Examination helps separate these causes.

Review daily care

Change nappies promptly, clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid powders and perfume. Give safe nappy-free time and use a bland protective emollient; see Emollient Therapy. Avoid adding several creams at once or using medicines without advice. Ask whether Topical Antifungal Treatment is suitable if yeast is suspected.

When to seek help

Arrange medical advice when careful care is not helping, the rash returns, or it spreads. Seek prompt help for fever, severe pain, blisters, open sores, pus, bleeding, marked swelling, or a child who seems unwell, feeds poorly, or is unusually sleepy.
