Nappy rash during teething: what to know

Teething commonly happens during a period when babies are exploring objects, eating differently and having changing bowel habits. If stools become loose or more frequent, the nappy area may face more moisture, enzymes and wiping. The timing can make teething seem responsible, but fever, significant diarrhoea or a spreading rash should not be dismissed as teething. A rash may also be caused by an irritant product, eczema or thrush.

Change nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water, and pat the skin dry. Give brief nappy-free periods and use a bland protective barrier on clean skin. Avoid fragranced wipes, talc, harsh soap and homemade mixtures. Keep offering the child's usual suitable fluids and foods, and monitor wet nappies if stools are loose. An emollient may support the skin barrier. Do not use antifungal treatment unless a clinician thinks thrush is present and recommends a product.

Contact a clinician for persistent diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, poor feeding, fewer wet nappies or unusual sleepiness. Seek prompt skin advice if there are blisters, pus, bleeding, marked pain, fever or rapidly spreading redness. Arrange review when the rash does not improve with careful changes and barrier protection, or when it repeatedly returns.
