Nail fungus separation: what to know

Separation, called onycholysis, creates a space beneath part of the nail. Fungus may collect in that space and cause yellowing, white colour, thick debris, roughness, or odour. A blow, repeated tapping, chemicals, manicure trauma, eczema, psoriasis, or thyroid and other health problems can also lift a nail. The separated portion will not reattach; improvement is seen as healthy nail grows from the base. Because the appearance overlaps, testing can prevent the wrong treatment.

Keep the nail short, dry, and clean without forcing tools into the gap. Cover it for activities that may catch the edge, and avoid glue, polish, artificial nails, and picking until the skin is settled. Do not share clippers or towels.
