Muscle tetanus: what should you know?

Tetanus bacteria can enter through a wound and produce a toxin that interferes with nerve signals controlling muscles. Stiffness may begin around the jaw, causing difficulty opening the mouth, then affect the neck, back, abdomen, or swallowing muscles. Spasms can be triggered by touch, noise, or light. Tetanus does not spread between people, but an apparently small or contaminated wound can still require assessment if vaccination protection is uncertain.

Clean a wound with running water and remove visible dirt without forcing objects deeper. Seek medical advice promptly for a puncture, crush injury, burn, bite, or wound contaminated with soil or saliva. A clinician will review the wound and your vaccination history and may recommend a booster or additional preventive treatment. Keep the wound covered with a clean dressing and do not wait for jaw stiffness before asking about protection.

Go to an emergency department for jaw stiffness, painful spasms, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, severe muscle rigidity, or symptoms after a wound when vaccination status is unclear. Tetanus can affect breathing and swallowing, so suspected illness requires hospital treatment and monitoring. Tell the team when the wound occurred, how it happened, and when you last received a tetanus vaccine if known.
