What does a muscle strain feel like?

Short answer
A muscle strain can feel like a sore, tight or sharp spot that worsens when the affected muscle contracts, stretches or bears load, sometimes with swelling or bruising.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common sensations
A mild strain may feel tender and sore after activity, while a more sudden injury can cause a sharper pain at the moment of loading. Tightness, muscle spasm, reduced strength and pain when the area is pressed are possible. Bruising or swelling can develop after a fibre injury. Location matters: pain that travels, causes tingling, or feels deep in a joint may have a nerve, joint or tendon source. Delayed soreness after unfamiliar exercise can feel different from pain that began with a single forceful movement.
What may help
Stop or scale back the movement that reproduces the pain and keep activity gentle. Short walks or easy range-of-motion exercises are usually more suitable than sprinting, lifting or deep stretching while symptoms are sharp. Support the area with comfortable clothing or footwear where appropriate, and use a wrapped cold pack if early swelling is bothersome. As pain settles, gradually restore movement, then strength and speed. Pain that worsens each day is a reason to pause progression and arrange an assessment.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for inability to use the limb, major bruising or swelling, a visible change in muscle shape, or sudden substantial weakness. Urgent help is needed for severe numbness, a cold or pale limb, or fever with redness and heat. Arrange review when symptoms do not improve, disturb sleep, or return whenever normal activity resumes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sensation fits a muscle strain or another tissue problem, which movements to avoid, and how to test readiness for exercise. Describe whether pain is sharp, aching, tight, local or travelling.

Questions people ask
Can a strain feel like a cramp?
It can cause tightness or spasm, but a recurring cramp and a strain have different causes and may need different advice.
Does bruising prove there is a muscle strain?
No. Bruising can occur with several injuries, so its size, timing and associated weakness should be assessed in context.
