Mupirocin on Boils: What to Know

A boil is a tender, inflamed lump that can contain pus around an infected hair follicle. Mupirocin is applied to the skin and may help a suitable local bacterial infection, but cream cannot reliably empty a pocket of pus beneath the surface. A boil may also cause painful skin and a noticeable skin lump. The appearance, depth, location, and surrounding redness determine whether topical treatment is enough.

Use a warm, clean compress to encourage comfort, keep the area covered with a clean dressing if it is draining, and wash your hands after touching it. Never squeeze, lance, or share towels used on the boil. If mupirocin is prescribed, apply a thin amount as directed and do not extend the course on your own. A clinician may instead recommend oral antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage when the collection is deeper.

Seek prompt care if the boil grows, pain becomes severe, redness spreads, drainage has a strong odor, or fever or chills appear. Urgent assessment is especially important for a boil near the eye, nose, or spine, for several boils, or when you have reduced immunity. Do not wait for topical treatment to work if you feel increasingly unwell.

Ask whether this is a superficial infection or an abscess, whether mupirocin is suitable, and what signs mean you need drainage. Mention prior boils, medicines, allergies, and whether anyone at home has similar lesions.
