Mupirocin for scabies: what to know

Scabies is caused by mites that trigger an itchy rash, often with itching worse at night and symptoms in close contacts. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter, producing crusting, tenderness, pus, or spreading redness. Mupirocin addresses susceptible bacteria on the skin, not the underlying infestation. Use a clinician-recommended scabies medicine exactly as directed; mupirocin alone will not clear the infestation. Apply mupirocin only where prescribed, keeping it away from eyes and mucous membranes, and wash hands before and after use. Follow the advice about treating close contacts and laundering or isolating recently used bedding and clothing. Do not keep repeating either medicine without review.
