Mupirocin for boils on the buttocks: what to know

A boil is a tender, inflamed lump that forms around an infected hair follicle. As pus collects beneath the skin, a topical medicine may not reach the centre of the pocket. Pressure, friction, sweating, and sitting can make a buttock boil especially uncomfortable. Several nearby lumps, repeated episodes, or a spreading area of redness can indicate a broader skin infection or another condition.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump at home. This can push infection deeper or spread bacteria to nearby skin and other people.

Arrange a clinical assessment and use mupirocin only if it has been prescribed for this episode. Keep the area clean, cover any drainage with a fresh dressing, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Warm, clean compresses may ease discomfort, but stop if the skin becomes more irritated. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage when a pus pocket is present.

Seek prompt care if the lump is rapidly enlarging, very painful, hot, or surrounded by spreading redness, or if fever develops. Get urgent help for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, red streaking, or difficulty passing urine.
