What should you know about mumps without fever?

Temperature can be normal early in an illness, after fever medicine, or in a person whose immune response is less obvious. Mumps may involve swelling near the jaw, headache, tiredness or pain with chewing, while other infections can cause different combinations of symptoms. For example, respiratory symptoms may fit a common cold, influenza, COVID-19 or another condition, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Record the timing of swelling, pain, cough, sore throat and any temperature readings, including medicines taken. Rest, drink fluids and avoid sharing cups or utensils. If mumps is a possibility, stay away from close contacts and call a healthcare service before attending. A clinician can consider exposure history, vaccination status and examination findings rather than relying on fever alone. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment.

Arrange medical advice for new swelling around the jaw, worsening illness, difficulty eating or drinking, or symptoms after a known exposure. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, stiff neck, severe headache, collapse, severe dehydration or sudden severe testicular or abdominal pain. A normal temperature does not make these warning signs less urgent.
