What should you know about mumps starting symptoms?

The first symptoms may be nonspecific, so they cannot confirm mumps on their own. Swollen or tender glands below the ears and along the jaw may develop later, sometimes on one side and sometimes on both. The face may look fuller, and chewing, swallowing or opening the mouth may hurt. A recent close contact or incomplete vaccination history can help a clinician interpret the picture, but fever and swollen glands have many possible causes.

Take your temperature if you feel feverish, rest and drink regularly. Choose foods that are easy to chew if the jaw becomes sore.
