Mumps on the skin: recognising the difference

The parotid glands sit in front of and below the ears. When mumps inflames them, the cheek or jaw can look puffy, and the skin may feel tight or tender even though the infection is deeper. Fever, headache, tiredness, dry mouth, and pain with chewing can accompany the swelling. A red, itchy, blistering, or widespread rash points toward another explanation, such as an allergic or viral skin illness, and should not be labelled mumps from a photograph alone.

Book a GP Consultation for facial swelling, especially when it follows contact with someone who has mumps or comes with fever. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or rubbing it, offer fluids, and choose foods that are easy to chew. Do not share personal items and reduce close contact until a clinician advises you. Note whether the swelling is in front of the ear, whether it is one-sided, and whether a true rash is present.

Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, the lips or tongue swell suddenly, the person becomes faint or confused, or fluids cannot be kept down. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe headache with neck stiffness, marked redness and warmth, or severe pain. These signs may indicate an emergency or a cause other than uncomplicated mumps.

Ask whether the finding is gland swelling or a skin condition, whether testing is needed, how to manage discomfort, and when it is safe to return to close-contact activities.
