Mumps on one side: what it can mean

Mumps is a viral infection that can inflame the parotid salivary glands near the cheeks and ears. The swelling may begin on one side and later involve the other, or remain one-sided. Pain when chewing or swallowing, a dry mouth, headache, tiredness, and Fever can occur. A swollen gland can also result from another infection, a blocked salivary duct, or a dental problem, so appearance alone cannot confirm mumps.

Arrange a GP Consultation if swelling is new, tender, or accompanied by fever. Until you have advice, rest, drink fluids, choose soft foods, and use simple pain relief only as directed for you. Avoid sharing cups, utensils, towels, or close face-to-face contact, and follow local advice about staying away from school or work if mumps is suspected. A clinician can consider your symptoms, vaccination history, examination, and whether testing or notification is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe dehydration, confusion, a severe headache with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or rapidly increasing swelling. Contact a clinician promptly if the pain becomes severe, the skin is very red, or you develop marked pain in the abdomen or testicles. These features need assessment because complications or a different cause may be present.

Ask whether the swelling fits mumps or another salivary-gland problem, how long to avoid close contact, which pain relief is suitable, and whether your household contacts need vaccination advice.
