What should you know about mumps neck swelling?

The glands that make saliva sit in front of and below the ears. When mumps inflames them, swelling can extend along the jawline and upper neck, sometimes on one side before the other. Chewing, sour foods and swallowing may become uncomfortable. Fever, headache or fatigue can be present, but their absence does not settle the diagnosis. Enlarged lymph glands and other infections can produce similar changes.

Contact a GP consultation service for advice when swelling appears, especially after close contact with suspected mumps or when vaccination history is unclear. Describe when it started, which side is affected and whether swallowing is difficult. Stay home from crowded settings, avoid sharing personal items and wash hands regularly while awaiting guidance. Sip water and select foods that require little chewing.

Arrange urgent assessment for swelling that progresses quickly, inability to keep fluids down, severe headache, unusual drowsiness, stiff neck, testicular pain or significant abdominal pain. Call emergency services for breathing problems, inability to swallow saliva, collapse, confusion or a seizure. Do not wait for a fever before seeking help when these signs occur.
