What should you know about mumps like infection?

The virus often affects salivary glands, creating tenderness or swelling beside the cheeks or below the ears. Some people have mild illness, while others develop fever, muscle aches, reduced appetite or discomfort when chewing and swallowing. Similar symptoms can come from other viral illnesses or from enlarged lymph glands, so appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
