What should you know about mumps in men?

Mumps is a viral illness involving the salivary glands near the cheeks and jaw. Men may have fever, headache, tiredness, and pain when chewing, alongside swollen glands. In some cases, inflammation affects a testicle, causing pain, tenderness, or enlargement, usually after the facial illness begins. This symptom is not proof of mumps, and scrotal pain has other urgent causes that need examination.

Arrange a GP Consultation and say that mumps may be possible before entering a clinic. Rest, drink fluids, and eat soft foods if your jaw hurts. Avoid close contact and sharing saliva-contaminated items while unwell. For testicular discomfort, support the scrotum and seek medical advice rather than relying on home care. Do not take unfamiliar medicines without checking their suitability.

Seek urgent help for sudden or severe testicular pain, a high-riding testicle, marked swelling, nausea, or vomiting, because these can signal a time-sensitive problem. Emergency care is also needed for breathing or swallowing difficulty, confusion, a stiff neck, fainting, or severe dehydration. Contact a clinician promptly if facial swelling or fever is worsening.
